Old Warsaw Gasworks

Description

One of the most beautiful buildings in the Wola District - the Warsaw Gasworks appeared in 1888. It was the second (the first being the plants in Powiśle) gasworks which was built as a result of the growing demand for gas. The buildings in former Dworska Street (today Kasprzaka Street), arranged in the neoclassical style, enchAanted the then inhabitants of the city not less than they do nowadays. Since 1925, the Gasworks was called the City Gasworks as it became the municipal property.

The rapid development of Warsaw together with its expanding territory and the continually growing demand for natural gas were the direct causes that the length of the gas transmission line at the beginning of the 1930s exceeded 450 km. After the outbreak of World War II the Gasworks halted operations and its buildings suffered severe damage. Successive work on its reconstruction meant that as early as in June 1945 the Gasworks resumed gas production as one of the first post-war plants in the capital city.

The Gasworks operated until 1978 when the production of gas in the plant at 25 Kasprzaka Street ceased. Currently, the object belongs to the Group Polish Oil and Gas Company in Warsaw (Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo S.A. - PGNiG). Today, buildings are an abandoned ruin.
